We sit down to chat with Graham Howieson, speaker on our exciting new course series, 'From Inception to Commercialisation: A New Approach to Clinical Trials'. The first course, ‘The Advancement of Research and Development (R&D) Clinical Trials using Software Automation’ is taking place on the 9th October 2024.
Q: How did you first become interested in using digital solutions to solve business problems within the biopharmaceutical and clinical trial industries? Was there something that happened in your own life that led you to wanting to improve this field?
A: I have always been curious and therefore willing to step outside of my comfort zone to help others. Specifically exploring new thinking and innovative approaches which can impact and improve the lives of patients managing their health condition.
Q: You have been coming up with innovative ideas for drug delivery and smart packaging solutions for over twenty-five years. What is your proudest achievement in the industry?
A: Still enjoying what I do today!
Q: What do you think is the most exciting technology at the moment that could be soon utilised within the biopharmaceutical and clinical trial industries?
A: Going beyond the pill ie: building a better patient experience via the utilisation of digital technology which has the capability to capture real world data endpoints from drug discovery to the commercial realisation and delivery at scale.
Q: You were the founder of Pill Connect Ltd, a pioneering organisation in the field of remote patient monitoring for clinical trials. The core solution is a patented drug dispensing device for tablets. How has this changed the landscape and are you witnessing the changes first hand?
A: Digital innovation is proven to deliver results. The value lies in the quality of the data which can improve decision making and outcomes.
A: At school you studied Computer Studies, English, Maths and Art. Do you still use any specific skills you gained from your education today?
A: I am a strong advocate of continuous learning. This is a discipline which I practise and apply on a daily basis.
Q: You have an exciting new course series with us, with the first event in October. What can the delegates expect?
A: Clarity, detail, content and strategic insight and learning.
And… some quick-fire questions:
1. What does SaaS mean? Software as a service.
2. What is the difference between artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning? While AI encompasses the idea of a machine that can mimic human intelligence, machine learning does not. Machine learning aims to teach a machine how to perform a specific task and provide accurate results by identifying patterns.
3. What is omni-channel communication and how can companies utilise it? Omni-channel is a business communication tool which allows the user to make a personalised choice in terms of how, what, when they receive information and in which format (the information is distributed) ie: video, audio, text, animation, email, mobile etc. It is designed to deliver a unified and seamless user experience.
