Days like these are an opportunity to reflect on the events that inspired them, to consider what developments there have been along the way and to ponder what happens next.
It is staggering to think of the changes that have taken place in the economic, political and social achievements of women.
I recently watched, again, the film The Duchess which reveals, through its portrayal of Georgiana the Duchess of Devonshire in Eighteen Century England, how completely without rights and power women were back then. She campaigned for political change, for example, despite the fact that women did not even have the right to vote. Watching the film from today’s perspective, a great deal has been achieved.
In a business perspective changes have speeded up throughout the past fifty years or so, but still there are problems of the glass ceiling to promotion and difficulties in certain professions and where business suffers from a male dominated culture.
Not so in the world of training and development!! Here at Falconbury, where we like to recruit and retain the best, more than two-thirds of the team are women. We use the best and most appropriate people to do the work, design the programmes, write the books and talk the talks.
We like to think we are at the stage where whether the person is male or female does not affect our choice at all. That is the ideal. For society at large and in the world at large, that, I am afraid, is not the case. Yet. Hence the need for International Women’s Day.
